Every summer, Henley-on-Thames transforms. The river fills with rowing crews, the town becomes wonderfully busy and suddenly everyone seems to have an opinion on hats, blazers and who has the best view of the river. But why exactly is Henley Royal Regatta so famous? And why do people flock from all over the world to attend?
The story goes back to 1839, when the first Henley Regatta was held as a local public attraction. It quickly became much more than a village day out, with competitive rowing becoming the main event.
Why was Henley chosen for the Regatta?
Henley had a natural advantage: the long, straight stretch of the Thames known as the Henley Reach made it an ideal setting for rowing races. The town had already hosted the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 1829, ten years before the Regatta began.
But the inspiration was also about supporting the town. Earlier races had attracted crowds, and Henley’s mayor and townspeople saw an opportunity to create an annual event that would bring visitors, trade and entertainment to the area. In March 1839, a public meeting at the Town Hall set the idea in motion.
What began as a local attraction, complete with a fair and other amusements, soon developed into a major rowing competition. Bringing people together and giving them a reason to discover Henley was part of the story from the very beginning.
Why is it a Royal Regatta?
Then came the royal connection. In 1851, Prince Albert became the Regatta’s first Royal Patron, giving the event the name we know today: Henley Royal Regatta.
Today, it is one of the biggest events in the international rowing calendar, attracting over 300,000 visitors (according to HRR themselves) as well as elite crews from around the world. More than 400 races take place across six days, with Olympic rowers competing alongside crews experiencing Henley for the first time.
But perhaps what makes Henley so special is that it isn't just about rowing. There is the atmosphere, the riverside setting, the traditions, the fashion and the sense that the whole town is part of the occasion.
Whether you're a rowing fanatic or in town for the Pimms and views, Henley Royal Regatta is quite a spectacle.
What should you wear?
And if you've ever wondered why Henley feels a little bit posh at times, this might have something to do with it!
When does it take place?
The Henley Royal Regatta 2027 will take place from Tuesday, 29 June to Sunday, 4 July 2027. It also falls on the first Saturday in July, if you're planning for future years.
It's a big deal to us that Henley Royal Regatta are our ace of diamonds in the Henley pack too, as the event really does make this small town world famous!
