Marlow Place
Marlow Place is one of the town’s true showstoppers – a handsome Grade I listed Georgian mansion just off Station Road and one of only two Grade I buildings in Marlow (the other being the bridge). Designed in the early 1720s by architect Thomas Archer in the English Baroque style, it was built for John Wallop, later 1st Earl of Portsmouth, and is believed to have hosted the Prince of Wales, the future George II, when he escaped the formality of Windsor for the Thames.
Over the centuries, Marlow Place has reinvented itself many times. In the early 19th century it supported the newly founded Royal Military College as an overflow site, later became a boarding school, and during the Second World War it even served as a “shadow factory”. By the 1950s it had turned into a finishing school for girls – before eventually settling into its current role as elegant office and workspace, its red and brown brickwork and grand staircase quietly watching Marlow change around it.
If you wander round to take a look, you'll also find Marlow Gin nestled at the back too.
This card is proudly sponsored by Gemma Parr Residential, an independent estate agency rooted in Marlow. Founder Gemma has spent nearly 30 years in property, over 20 of those connected to Marlow, and now runs a bespoke sales and lettings service focused on the town and its surrounding villages. Just as Marlow Place tells the story of homes and lives across the centuries, Gemma’s work is all about matching people to the right home in this corner of the Thames Valley – making her the perfect sponsor for one of Marlow’s most storied addresses.
